Dull brown-spored (lamellae ± greyish), mostly dull-coloured agarics with strongly fibrillose to squamulose, often umbonate pileus; spores either smooth, nodulose-angular or with thick spines; metuloid cystidia of frequent occurrence; without distinct chemical reactions but often with spermatic or otherwise characteristic smells.
